Finite elements for the Lichnerowicz equation

Gantumur Tsogtgerel
Mathematics Department, UCSD

The Lichnerowicz equation is a semilinear elliptic equation, which arises as a part of the Einstein constraint system of general relativity. The nonlinearity is not monotone and involves both positive and negativepowers of the unknown. In this talk I will discuss preliminary results onthe well posedness of the Lichnerowicz equation on a bounded domain andaddress some key issues in using finite element methods for solvingthis equation.
