Finite elements for the Lichnerowicz equation

Abstract

The Lichnerowicz equation is a semilinear elliptic equation, which arises as a part of the Einstein constraint system of general relativity. The nonlinearity is not monotone and involves both positive and negative powers of the unknown. In this talk I will discuss preliminary results on the well posedness of the Lichnerowicz equation on a bounded domain and address some key issues in using finite element methods for solving this equation.
